SCHOLARLY WORK:

Franklin W. Knight, of Stony Brook, New York, "THE BLACK ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS" presents you with its award for a Distinguished Scholarly Work in the Humanities, that work being "SLAVE SOCIETY IN CUBA." You have given us a wider understanding of how grievous was our condition outside the United States, but you have also made it plain that without Black hands nurturing the soil of so many places in these Americas, these Americas might never have become viable countries. You have described how, in Cuba, even under the most barbarous conditions, Black people made stellar contributions to nationhoods which have been summarily dismissed by other historians. You have brought to light still another facet of our secret strength. For this the "BLACK ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS" honors you with its award of $500.
