Artists, letters and fine arts!

THE ONE THOUSAND guests who attended the Second Annual Awards Banquet staged by the Black Academy of Arts and Letters Sunday night in the Waldorf Astoria's Grand Ballroom will long remember the glittering evening and its wall to wall carpeting of Black greats.  The show was covered by Teleprompter Cable TV under the direction of Melvin Bailey and Mrs. Charlotte Schiff and will be cablecast at a date to be announced. Shown are only a few of the galaxy of participating stars who added their greatness to that historic evening.  From left are guest artist Bill Cosy who kept a promise he made a year ago to appear at this year's banquet. Next are, Jean Hutson, accepting the Hall of Fame Enrollment scroll for George Washington Williams from Howard University's Dorothy Porter. Mrs. Hutson is Mistress of the famed Schomburg Collection. Third photo shows writer Lerone Bennett and public relation expert Fred Weaver. Weaver a great grandson of Frederick Douglass accepted his Hall of Fame enrollment scroll from Bennett. Last photo shows famed poet Gwendolyn Brooks who was cited for her outstanding achievements in letters. Author Arna Bontemps made the presentation. (Gilbert Photos)
