1. Important Works -- Two Murals

1. "The History of California, 1850-1950"
Painted for the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Co, Los Angeles, in 1949. This mural depicts the major roles the Negro played in the development of California from statehood to the present. Many phases of California life are portrayed such as gold mining, whaling, the Pony Express and the Building of the Union Pacific Rail Road.

One of the most colorful characters of the early history of the State was Mary Ellen Pleasant. She raised a purse of $30,000.00 which she gave to John Brown. With this sum, he purchased 15,000 old rifles at $2.00 each. These he later used in his Harpers Ferry Raid.

Later developments treated include the Boulder Dam Project, the Building of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the fight for Civil Rights.

The mural measures 9 ft. x 16 ft. and is now installed in the lobby of the Insurance Company's rew building. The building was designed by the architect, Paul Williams.
