To Inmans portrait Dunlap remarks on his work

Min of Inman, by Cummings.

These gentlemen have formed an art companionship (continued some 5 years) - "and a friendship was formed which continued unbroken until Mr Inmans death and in [[strikethrough]] next [[/strikethrough]] 1827 left Mr Cummings the best instructed min painter in the country by withdrawing from the department altogether"
xx Mr C stands, if not the very first in his branch of portraiture certainly among the first - and by his liberality to younger Artists and his exemplary conduct as a man and a gentleman must be looked upon to as one of those who are raising the Arts of Design to that station in public estimation which they claim as their right. He has long been one of the Council & Treasurer of the NAD and has delivered lectures on his Art" - "The essay on the theory and practice of a mature painting which enriches this work are from the pen of Mr Cummings."

Among the beautiful portraits which Mr Cummings constant practice have produced I will only mention Miss O Brien - Mrs Cummings. - Mr Henry Inman Mr Hatch and Mr Thos Cole - These and many others will bear comparison with any work produced in that branch of Art."
