[[image - shaded figure]] so far. I have thus given [[strikethrough]] only [[/strikethrough]] the effect produced by Light in Shade on the objects and. by the. simple projection of form, but to this may be added the power of "relief" or projection from the canvass. or ground which is dependent in chiaro scuro. for its power of deception. Thus the Light side of an object may be [[strikethrough]] brought [[/strikethrough]] opposed to a dark ground and the dark side to its opposite, a light ground. [[image - shaded cube]] and this produces the greatest amount of projection to an object, but is one of the simplest forms. Example [[strikethrough]]of[[/strikethrough]] in the art of chiaro scuro -- and generally most extensively practiced. the combination of Light with light. dark with dark. gradually losing the outlines of the great masses. of light and dark by intermediate gradations until they both melt almost imperceptibly into the ground is a treatment calculated to produce a higher and more impressive effect in art, but of course is not applicable to a single object. .at least not so. except by descending into matter too intricate for this treatise although the Globe form. may be made to a great extent to exemplify this Principle, the gradual rounding, a gradation of shadow to the edges affording an opportunity of so melting the lines into the ground. [[image - shaded sphere]] The dark side of the ground is in the dark side of the object. the light Side of the object in the light Side of the ground. in the dark Side of the object reflective light is the only power in chiaro scuro capable of producing. relief. or detachment of the object from the ground. The simple process of putting a dark object. on the light side of the ground, and a light object on the dark Side of the ground. seems at present to be the most popular receipe for conducting the construction [[strikethrough]] of a [[/strikethrough]] pictures in the lower classes of art, in some of the Schools. [[image - shaded cube]] The effect is always shocking but by no means so. grand. in as where a gradation of effect. is produced. by massing of both light and dark. The latter. is the mode in which Subjects of a higher ground are treated by the skillful artist.
