Brig William Pitt. Continued

April 2 At 8 am, finding no more signs of hire took in the cargo again

April 3 Sailed from Edgartown

April 5 Arrived at Boston

April 6 Commenced discharging, and engaged Cap Gifford to attend to the delivery of the cargo to ascertain its condition: Many articles were found to be damaged & some destroyed by the fire & the water thrown in extinguishing it.

Surveyor Reports

Apr. 2 Ab: Osborn. Richd Ryder & Chs. S. Darrow examined the vessel at Edgartown & found that she had been on fire about 24 hours in the forward part of the Hold: Several Planks in the Deck cut to put out the fire without succeeding, and the Holes stopped up again. Recommended that the Hatches be taken off and as much cargo got out as might be necessary to put out the fire, & a further examination.

Apr. 3 The Cargo having been partly discharged & the fire extinguished found that the latter had been confined mostly to the forward part of the hold where much of the cargo was destroyed & injured by the fire & water. The Deck Beams were considerably injured, but after a careful examination they recommended that the vessel should be temporarily repaired and proceed to Boston, as she was perfectly tight in the bottom, and in a fit condition to perform the voyage safely.

Apr 4 They advised that the Cotton Waste should be carried on Deck because of the danger of its igniting again
