supposed to have said "Whenever I see a drawing of Delacroix it is excellent, but his paintings are full of bad drawing." In this instance (Delacroix's) where we find not always a contradiction between his black and white drawings and his paintings, it is due to the domestic tradition from which that painter freed himself to become the father of modern painting. 
In impressionism where a devotion to natural light caused the disappearance of contours in the representation of object images a certain type of drawing never before considered a such (sketchy) was a necessity. In the free use of color such as some of the moderns aspire to another type of simplification almost. The reverse of the former (impressionists) is the appropriate one.
