increased the range of pigments that artists use and has refined many of those which once faded, so that they are now permanent. Only in recent time has it been possible for the artist to give up the arduous grinding of paints with mortar and pestle and instead purchase them in tubes. Even more recently, the artists have gained another advantage from the disciplines of science and technology-acrylic paints, which dry quickly, and is replaceing oil paints which require weeks to dry. And today there is a steel alloy, developed for construction, and known as weathering steel, that is in demand by sculptors, because of its strength and great beauty in the weathering process.

I can also mention a recent and personal kind of gratitude to technology. For an exhibit this past March, I executed my paintings on masonite panels, working with mounted papers and lacquer paints. After the works were taken from my studio, which was quite cold, and exposed to heated buildings, a number of them became sriously [seriously] warped and distorted. To remedy this, I had the help of a chemist and an engineer. The chemist determined a more suitable glue for the paper. Following the engineer's suggestion, the paintings were first returned to their proper shape, with heavy weights and clamps. Then a wire, under high tension, was drawn taut across the back of each work to prevent a future warping, a use of wire cable tension similar to Roebling's.

Presently, it seems it is the architects who can be considered the clearest modern example of the Renaissance personality. They must have engineering skills and a great deal of technical information about building materials and methods. In whatever they design, they must see that everything functions efficiently. In this world, they must know a great deal about law, as it applies to zoning and building codes and they must be astute enough to deal with contractors, politicians and financiers. Then they must synthesize all these elements into creating a
