ILEANA SONNABEND
39 QUAI DES GRANDS AUGUSTINS PARIS VI

COPY OF LETTER FROM NINA KAIDEN, JANUARY 4, 1966

Dear Ileana,

I have your letter for December 20 and I am delighted to learn that you agree that the April opening would be better for you than in February. I am pleased that you would like to work with other dealers throughout Europe, but there are a number of considerations which I think have to be worked out.

For instance, with regard to Italy, Philip Morris is not allowed to put the exhibition into Italy because of the tobacco monopoly rulings. England, on the other hand is of course terribly important and I am awaiting with baited breath your list of galleries that you are working out with Cromwell Jones. I mentioned to Leo Castelli in our last meeting that we have already had several visits from a variety of people. The only one we are definitely committed to is Heiner Friedrich and I am including for your information a list of the galleries and cities he has arranged.

We are still most anxious to open this show properly in three places which are not mentioned on the list and I would appreciate your immediate response and suggestions as to how to handle this — Amsterdam, Stockholm and London. Amsterdam and Stockholm in particular, we are prepared to support fully with intensive public relations activity...receptions, etc.

One of the problems is that unless you can supply me quickly with your desires and confirmed arrangements as to excellent show places, the local Philip Morris men on the scene will take over and they are unfamiliar with the art world.

As I am sure you can understand, we are now in the position of having the sets completed and they open in February in Melbourne, Guatemala and Munich to be followed later in the spring with Caracas, Buenos Aires, Belgrade, the German and Holland tour, your own opening and hopefully those which I have just mentioned.

The Philip Morris people here have apparently had some questions as to your new gallery, its location, etc. and I would appreciate it if by return mail you could send me some photos and some descriptions of the place to set their minds at ease. Also if you have any long distance calls to make on my behalf in setting up the pop shows in these other countries, please do so, and bill me when these dates are confirmed.
