INTERVIEW WITH LEO COSTELLI 3-3-3

in and will do things like very different problems, like getting the wharehouse [[warehouse]] ready for a show when it seems [[strikethrough]] really [[/strikethrough]] almost impossible. A troubleshooter. We have a small staff, and we have to get ready for a show that occupies about two-thirds of the wharehouse [[warehouse]], so there he just accomplishes the impossible, and gets the things up. [[strikethrough]] So [[/strikethrough]] he does these things which [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] are only two-thirds because I'm involved in the ? station which keeps me here which is more than it is necessary for him to be here. One important function that Alvin has is to just take care of all the artists who come in here with slides. For advice, and with the hope some of them that they might join the gallery, [[strikethrough]] sometimes [[/strikethrough]] which hardly ever happens of course.

MRS. V.: I'd like to discuss this aspect further, in as far as I know, you are the only gallery that provides this service. Other galleries do look at specific artist's slides, [[strikethrough]] but they don't seem to do either [[/strikethrough]it is an artist that they feel could fit into their organization, [[strikethrough]] or [[/strikethrough]] and they may keep some work nearby without giving them a show, or they just say "no" they are not interested, and they are not for them, Whereas Allan seems to become interest, keep the artist's slides nearby. I know because I have come in and used his slides and used some of his [[strikethrough]] slides for [[/strikethrough]] artists for my exhibitions. And he seems to help promote them although they are not gallery artists, - help them in other exhibitions.

MR. C.: He does this at other museums, galleries, any service that he--

MRS. V.: Yes, any service. And then some of these artists are eventually your artists. There are [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] very few artists, say out of ninety that he decides are worthy.

MR. C.: It is very difficult. There are maybe a dozen artists that come to us in that casual way, who come into the gallery. Artists are chosen on an entirely different basis, [[strikethrough]] than [[/strikethrough]] that's a whole chpater, [[chapter]] [[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] that people are terribly interest about, and I try to explain to the artists who come and say "why, not me?" And I must explain to them that sometimes I find the work extremely good, and it even might fit the general things of the gallery, but it just doesn't happen that way. This I would like to explain to you if you have time if you would like to hear about that.
