SUSANNE HILBERRY GALLERY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 29,2000
ELIZABETH MURRAY
February 5 - April 8, 2000

The Susanne Hilberry Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit of paintings by esteemed artist Elizabeth Murray. The exhibit will open Saturday February 5 and run through Saturday April 8, 2000. There will be an opening reception to meet the artist on Saturday March 11 from 5-8pm.

Elizabeth Murray is one of the most critically acclaimed painters working today. Since her first exposure in the 1972 annual painting show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Murray has been in hundreds of shows from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. to the Hayward Gallery in London. Her work is in the collections of such museums as the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

A native Midwesterner she began her career in New York in the 60's and 70's. Despite that era's penchant for Minimalism and it's pronouncements of paintings demise, Murray persevered and became a symbol of the "reinvigoration of painting". She proved that painting was still as valid as ever.

Murray's work combines biomorphic and geometric forms, images and abstraction. The large scale and structural complexity of the twisting, shifting, undulating surfaces transform the two dimensional into the three, pushing painting toward sculpture; while her dynamic use of color and texture further heighten the physical nature of the paintings.
