FEDERAL WORKS AGENCY
PUBLIC BUILDINGS ADMINISTATION
WASHINGTON

OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER

IN REPLYING, QUOTE THE ABOVE SUBJECT, BUILDING, AND THESE LETTERS FA

July 7, 1941

Mr. Ben Shahn
Jersey Homesteads
Hightstown, New Jersey

Dear Ben:

Reference is made to the cartoons for your murals in the Social Security Building, photographs of which were submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts for comment and advice. Attached is a copy of the report which Mr. Bruce received from the Commission on this work. In view of the Commission's report you may proceed with the painting at your convenience.

I have been expecting a note from you stating that you would eliminate the patch on the eye of one of the figures in the positive panel in compliance with the specific request of the Social Security Board. Your check covering the cartoon payment was forwarded to the Division of Accounts on July 1 and you should have your check within ten days to two weeks of that date.

You will note in the Commission's report that there was a slight misunderstanding as it is not the intention of this office to request full size cartoons in color. The Commission is being notified of this.

Every good wish for the continued success of the project and my congratulations on your work to date.

Very cordially yours,

Ed Rowan
