Jacob Lawrence, New Jersey-born painter who emerged from obscurity with his entries at 1940 American Negro Exposition in Chicago, is hailed by many as dean of current Negro painters. In 1957, noted author and art critic Seldon Rodman referred to him as "the ablest painter the Negro race has so far produced in America---perhaps anywhere."
