Aaron Douglas, painter-potter-educator, is art pioneer who has been among leaders in his field since 1925, when he became only Negro artist presented in late philosopher Alain Locke's book, The New Negro. Especially talented in area of realistic portrait painting, Douglas holds post of art professor at Fisk University.

Norman Lewis of New York City rates highly with art critics for his demonstrated mastery of both abstract and representational techniques of painting. Recipient of 1955 Carnegie Institute Award, he has exhibited in galleries throughout U. S. Cedric Dover's book, American Negro Art, calls Lewis' work "poetic hieroglyphs."
