Dear Sir,
It has been brought to my attention that you would be
sympathetic with and interested in the work of the Foundation. I am,
therefore, writing to ask you an important favour.
You will be aware that the foundation held an International
Exhibition & Sale of donated works of art at Woburn Abbey in October last.
Many of the works exhibited were sold immediately. Unfortunately, however,
many of them were not, particularly a number of works by American artists,
with which the essentially conventional English market has not yet caught
up. I should like to ask you therefore whether you have any suggestions
as to how some, or all, of these works might be sold in the United States.
Our dilemma, as you may no doubt imagine, is that we are very anxious not
to do anything which might in any way damage the market position of any
of the artists who have been kind enough to contribute works to the
Foundation. For this reason, we are unwilling to auction them or to offer
them for sale in a public and indiscreet manner.
I realise the awkwardness and delicacy of asking this
favour of you since you yourselves have an interest in one or two of
the artists involved. I very much hope, however, that you can offer some
suggestions.
I might add that the prices indicated in the enclosed
catalogue were simply suggested by the contributing artists and we
would, therefore, be able to reconsider them in the event of a firm offer.
Our only concern is that we do not do so publicly. I have deleted the
works which have already been sold. I look forward to hearing from you.
With good wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Charles Ellis
Encl: Charles Ellis, Executive Secretary.
