Mr. Charles W. Millard
Chief Curator
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Smithsonian Institution
Washington, D.C.

Dear Charles:

This is to confirm our recent discussion at luncheon regarding Miss Alma Thomas.

My original thought of trying to arrange a meeting with you, Mr. Lerner and Miss Thomas is not practical simply because while Miss Thomas may be available most of her major pictures will not. Between 25 and 30 of her works have been selected and are committed to Exhibitions this fall at Iowa, Los Angles and Howard University.

With this in mind, it would seem best if both of you would plan to attend her opening at Howard University on or about the 5th. of September. At that time you could meet her and at the same time select one of the 15 major works on Exhibition for Hirshhorn Collection. As soon as the date is firm, you will receive invitations.

As I mentioned at our meeting, the offer of a gift to the Hirshhorn at this time is being made because, as you explained, funds are presently not available for purchase. Hopefully, when funds are available the Hirshhorn may see fit to purchase a Thomas directly from the artist, although this in no way represents a stipulation to my gift.

For the record, please let me restate my position: Shortly after I left the Corcoran, Miss Thomas asked me to advise her on certain Estate problems and most particularly on the disposition of her works of art. This I have done. I am not a Trustee of her Estate and in no way do I stand to benefit financially from my relationship with her.
