which had ruined my spring Study he spoke of my success during the fall and the excellent manner in which I had commenced the Ariadne- I am this morning going down to the Academy to take a farewell look of the old school room where last fall I spent so many industrious hours the success of all the students is quite marked and a few of them promise well for the future Church my friend is designing for various papers some for Harpers, Appletons and others Uncles doing well Friday he called on me and gave me the sad news of the serious illness of my old schoolfellow A.P. Ryder He was my best friend in the Acad and promised well. I secured him the charge of the winter water color exhi and while I was sick he called upon me quite well shortly after he was taken with the Rheumatism never having had it before, and on Friday Church told me his life was despaired of as the Rheu had gone to the brain. There was yet a chance of his rallying which I hope has been the case- I rather hate to leave N.Y. and yet on some accounts I am glad. Chicago is now almost a pioneer city and the various pleasures of refinement and education are disregarded in the rush of building and business- and yet I am to be of service at home in aiding my Father. I am to have plenty of outdoor exercise and this summer will have abundant chance for sketching which I shall avail myself of-
