In the anti room the door into the hall standing open, I used often to go and look with deep interest at the formal portraits hung upon the wall. By the closed door which entered into the studio a long bell cord hung close by a little framed card upon which was printed "Bust-Portrait-300$. Three quarter length 500$ to 700. Full length 1000$". The sight of this little tablet always seemed to refute my Father's opinion that an artist would starve, which in Business one was assured of a competency.  Elkins, a landscape painter of the Far West was one of the painters of position, and a delightful character Messer by name, who wore a cloak, was one of my favorites and I used frequently
