My bedroom was over the Central hall with a balcony which surmounted the porch at the front door, facing East on Michigan Avenue, the Park, then the basin and beyond the Rail road piling, the broad expanse of Lake Michigan. It must have been near dawn when I was concious [[conscious]] of my Mother in my room opening the blinds. I saw that the Eastern sky was a bright red from the glare of the fire behind us - she said, "Carroll you had better get up, your Father has gone to the office and thinks there is great danger". My Father had gone to the store and removed the money and some valuable papers from the safe, bringing them home and placing them in the drawer of his bureau in his bed room where they were all burned in the fire which swept away the home about ten o'clock
