-bered about one hundred students. The collection of casts was excellent and our instructor Professor Wilmarth a good teacher, as our drawing was careful and thorough. Here I met as fellow students the men who have since counted strongly in American Art- George de Forest Brush J Alden Weir, Charles Melville Dewey Albert P. Ryder, Abbott H. Thayer. My old friend F.S. Church, had also come on to New York and was supporting himself drawing on wood and by selling an occasional water color. The Art life of the city was then centered in the Academy's annual exhibition, the 10th Street Studio Building when occasional afternoon receptions took place, and Leavitt's Auction room on Broadway near 12th St when the important sales took place.
