To show how thickly we were peopled by Germans in the west at that time, I one day went with the farmers off on the prarie to the west in search of a cow that had strayed and I found my-self in a little settlement composed entirely of Germans, not one of whom understood English. I felt quite independent earning my own pocket money. I wanted deeply to study Art and become an Artist but I had practical sense enough to realize that it would be some years before I could earn enough out of it to support myself, and with the conciousness of my Father's present struggle it seemed selfish of me to ask my support of him while by going into the store I could possibly relieve him of the burden of my support.
