1873. My mind was full of my prospective departure for Europe to continue my Art Studies.  Life on the farm with the outdoor vocation and exercise had put me in excellent health and I had studied French most of the summer. It was a hard effort to go, but my mother did all in her power to aid my departure. I had a conciousness that my Father hesitated as to the wisdom of this really embracing Art as a profession, and this departure for Europe meant that definitely. It was on the 13th of October 1873 that I sailed from New York in the afternoon on board of the the S.S. Italy of the National Line for England. -
