Excess was unknown in my surroundings. But it did not take me long to see that the "bar" was every where in evidence in England. On Monday we drove out to Eaton Hall and on our way back came through a pretty little English village, a realization of engravings I have seen in books. I saw a relic of the past in one of the streets which should be kept in a glass case: a pair of Stocks. It struck me that this must have been an excellent form of punishment much better than a fine, or an imprisonment
