Dear Madam:

I am not particularly in sympathy with this present day fad for discovering documentary photographers. I know nothing of Mr. Hine's work and doubt that his documents are any more important than those of hundreds of other people whose negatives may or may not have been saved. I know of several collections of negatives in Boston, fully as important as those of Atget or Hine, but they will not be exploited. Some of them are in the possession of societies who use them for their proper function, and one very important one of historical value is in the possession of a person who for personal motives will not allow it to be transferred to proper custody and will probably eventually destroy it.

In any case, whatever Mr. Hine's importance may be, he seems to be fully publicized as the present moment.

Yours very truly,
