------------

------------
Special to THE NEW YORK TIMES.

HASTINGS, N. Y., Nov. 3-Lewis W. Hine of 170 Edgar's Lane, a photographer well known for his pictures revealing sociological conditions, died today in the Dobbs Ferry Hospital after an operation. He was born in Oshkosh, Wis., sixty-six years ago.

While teaching at the Ethical Culture School, New York, Mr. Hine became interested in photography as a profession when he used a camera to record the work of the school. Later, while a photographer on the staff of Survey, he vividly presented child-labor conditions in factories in many cities. For the Red Cross Mr. Hine took pictures of the effects of the World War.

He leaves a son, Corydon Hine, a sculptor, and a daughter, Miss Lola Hine, both of New York.
