NARA 61 118 not marrying Caleb's mother - how could he? She was a slave so was her child and it was a violation of the laws of North Carolina for a free man to marry a slave. Of course, he went to no expense in raising Caleb till he became free I think the wishes of the boy should be regarded and he remains in the custody of his Father. Endorsement of Bvt Col.
