I would visit the Japan folk art museum {Nihon Mingei Kan) in Tokyo and its branches in  Kurashiki, Tottori, and Osaka. The folk flea markets(nomi-no-ichi)at the Kitano shrine and Toji temple in Kyoto, I have read, are rich occassions that provide tremendous opportunities to experience this aspect of Japanese culture.
