it arrived yesterday morning in a heavy rain.
Fortunately I was not yet gone to the school. The driver went around to the back gate and he and I attempted in vain to get the box into the yard. We then threw it on its back on the side walk and with a crow bar from the workmen next door knocked off the lid. The driver was shivering with cold and was wet to the stem and I gave him a good drink of whiskey.
He helped me carry in all the stuff and then got some of the workmen to help us throw the box over the fence.
A more friendly expressman I never met. We were both wet through by the time we were done. 
The little blue chair seems to be in pretty fair condition. But the first little "empire" chair had both legs broken off and one arm and the back broken badly and your favorite has the back broken away from the arm. They are all three wrecked. This was done in the custom-house I am certain. But there is no redress. Nothing else in the. box was injured as far as I can see.
Mother and Edi are both in love with the rug - which I spread out in the parlor.
