One Hundred Years Ago

(From Poulson's Advertiser of Jan. 20, 1834)

Our fellow citizens will be gratified to learn that the Board of Managers of the Seamen's Friendly Society have engaged as their Boarding House and Registry Office for Seamen the spacious and commodious premises, the dwelling house of the late Stephen Girard. It is designed to be emphatically a Sailors' Home, where every domestic comfort may be enjoyed and where merchants may ship their crews. The principle shipping merchants of the city have patronized the institution and taken a liberal share with the directors in sustaining the rent of the house. The most flattering prospects now cheer the minds of the managers. The friends of the society generally are invited to visit and inspect the establishment.
