IMAGES FROM THE LAND / Georgia shack series

(painted terracotta sculptures by Beverly Buchanan)

It is not my intention to produce copies of buildings that once dotted the Southern highways and which were visible to motorists traveling south from the early 1940's through the 60's. Some still remain as home for families.

The surviving fragments are the inspiration for most of these sculptures. I imagine all of them as part of some area with flowers out front. The strong presence of these skeletal sections, covered with vines and kudzu, and home for snakes, holds my attention and demands that I use black enamel paint. I hope they don't scare anybody. A few of these are up in New York City, scaring people. I have, of coures, rearranged the look of the dwellings to fit my feelings of their form as sculpture. The architectural element, found in all of my work, I think, is present in this series.
