MISS MARY'S HOUSE

A large oak told you to slow down to a respectful crawl and look for the copper roof. Her house was a magical, imposing fortress on a rise above the road. She knew you were coming. No one told her your favorite drink but there it was, waiting in a glass with ice. From where? There was no visible refrigeration. Bringing a "token" from a meager savings account, I left with the understanding of silenced secrets and a prophecy: "You'll be famous long before you die." When is that, went answered. Twenty years ago, people got roots for tea and herbs for a variety of maladies. She grew everything she ate. Thank you, Miss Mary.
