Apparently, she simply wandered into a class in philosophy, of all things, and sat down.  I often wondered whether she learned anything there.

I have retained the point of view with respect to the community that first developed in college.  I do not believe an artist should live in a vacuum, cut off from the world around him.  It seems to me that, apart from the duty to try to help others, you draw inspiration from contacts with circles outside your own.  I know there are many artists who do not shar this opinion.  They concentrate exclusively on their work, mindful, I imagine, of the axiom that "Art is long, life short."  But I think that to involve oneself in other matter is time well spent.

Certainly, I treasure the friends I made when I was taken into a sorority, Kapp Alpha Theta.  I could not afford to live in the Theta house but I went there almost every day.  In principle, I oppose sororities and fraternities because I consider them undemocratic.  But not to be bidden by the
