On other nights, I would study almost as late. Fortunately, I have never needed more than five or six hours sleep, at most, probably because I was brought up on ranches, and so I was able to weave or study into the early hours of the morning.

Consequently, my grades did not suffer. Toward the end of my junior year, I received a note. The handwriting looked familiar. As for the message, I thought it was a joke and I suspected that I knew who had perpetrated it. It said, "It is my privilege and pleasant duty to inform you that you have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa. The elections are to remain a secret until the initiations, the date of which will be announced shortly. We hope to hear from you in the affirmative."
