Whenever it was not in use for a lesson. My fee was $40 for a ten-hour course. Presently, I had three pupils, all middle-aged women. In the afternoon after classes in Piedmont, I hurried home to give a lesson or, as often happened, to straighten out someone who had run into a snag on the loom. In solving their problem, I learned more about weaving, myself. That was an unexpected dividend.
One way and another, I banked about $500 during the year, no great sum but enough, I thought, to send me on my way. I wrote Dean Leonard and he had replied, in effect, "Come ahead. There will be something here." It would be chancy, I knew, and in such matters I am inclined to be timid. But I determined to take the chance. I may say, in this connection, I invariably advise young artists to take chances, pointing out that if they wait until they feel completely secure financially before making a move, the opportunity may slip past.
