recommending particularly the Hotel de l'Universite, at 22 rue de l'Universite, near the Cluny Museum. It was demi-pension, providing lunch or dinner. They also named a number of inexpensive restaurants near the hotel and in the neighborhood of the Bourse. With careful budgeting, I calculated that I could stretch my slim exchequer to perhaps as much as six weeks in Paris.

As matters turned out, I was to remain in Europe much longer, and travel much further, than I had thought. The run of luck that had been with me all year still held.

In my excitement, I wrote letters to just about everyone I knew in California, telling them my plans. Back came a letter from some friends. They wrote that their teenage daughter and a schoolmate were going to Paris.
