by a friend of Leon's. I was completely captivated by the beauty of the tropical flowers and fruit, which I had not seen before. Through a series of mishaps next morning, we missed the cruise ship. It had sailed by the time we reached the dock. One could, I suppose, find some symbolism in missing the boat on one's honeymoon, but at the time it presented itself to me simply as an amusing problem. All my wedding finery was on the vanished cruise ship. My equipment ashore consisted of a white sport dress, a white raincoat and a toothbrush. There was no time for shopping in Puerto Rico. A freighter, sailing in a few hours, would overtake the Canadian ship in Trinidad, and Leon promptly booked passage on it. I found Trinidad delightful with its lava formations and particularly the shells on the beaches.
