For some reason, the nurse on duty failed to answer the bell. In the nick of time, Dr. Brunn appeared. He was not making the routine hospital round; Albert had asked him to look in on me. It was a very close call. What Dr. Brunn said to the nurse is best left unsaid.

In addition to his interest in Oriental art, printing and books, Albert backed any project having to do with music, helping provide funds to bring the great artists and the great orchestras to San Francisco. Through him I met the other principle patrons of music, Mrs. Max Koshland's and Mrs. Sigmund Stern, both grande dames. Mrs. Koshland's home was a white marble copy of the Petit Triannon. Their daughters, Peggy Schloss and Elise Haas, are among my dearest friends.

Mrs. Stern was instrumental in bringing Diego Revera to San Francisco to speak about Mexican art and his own paintings and murals. The auditorium in the Art Museum
