The standard called for five qualifications, "knowledge of one or more arts and skills, teaching ability, desirable personality, sufficient time to devote to the Service, and cheerful acceptance of assignments, direction and supervision."  If a volunteer passed the test, he went into the hands of the Red Cross for training and indoctrination.

In one phase of my work, I went from city to city making speeches, explaining Arts and Skills, and calling for volunteers.  The response was overwhelming.  Artists of the calibre of Alexander Calder, Grant Wood and Alexander Brooke, came into the hospitals.  Henry Dreyfuss, one of the leading industrial designers, and Sam Marx, a fine architect and painter, and his wife, Florene, already an avid Red Cross worker, gave lavishly of their time.
