The next morning I telephoned Pat. He sounded cheery. He asked about Lisbon and whether we had seen Luis Lupi. I thanked him for putting us in touch with Mr. Lupi. Then I told him about the contretemps at the airport. "Why didn't you call me?" he asked. "I'd have come out and fixed everything." Well! I decided I liked this man very much. "What about dinner Monday night?" he said. "Just us." I said, truthfully, that I was about to remind him of that invitation. He laughed and said, "I'll pick you up at the hotel around 7:30 -- and this time try not to be an hour late."

He telephoned Monday morning. "Maybe we'd better put off dinner tonight," he said. I forgot today is another of those damn French holidays and the restaurants I had in mind are all closed."
