Dear Mrs. Varian:

Thank you very much for your congratulations on the gift from David. It was a very exciting thing to work on with him when it became clear that the possibility of more than just one or two objects were to be included. David, of course, was exceptional and generous throughout. In many ways, the exhibition, which you so successfully organized, enabled the whole gift to transpire. For this, you should feel that you had no small part to play.

I mentioned your request to Mr. Knox concerning the loan of James Brooks' Gant, 1955. We foresee no difficulty in lending the painting for exhibition in New York and at Cranbrook. By the way, did you also know that the Gallery's collection includes Cooba, 1963 by the same artist. The painting is reproduced in color on Page 55 of the Praeger catalogue entitled, "Contemporary Art 1942-72: Collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery."

Our schedule here is virtually completed for the next two-and a half years. We appreciate your thinking of us but it isn't possible to participate.

Once again, we are delighted to be able to loan the painting to you and please let me know should you be interested in Cooba. Please forward loan forms at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,
Robert T. Buck Jr.
