James Brooks (Finch College Museum of Art, New York City, through June 8). Dating from 1950, a retrospective of paintings and works on paper by a veteran New York artist, a convert of abstraction in the 1940s. Simultaneously, paintings by Brooks will be shown at the Martha Jackson Gallery. The Finch show later travels to East Hampton, N.Y., and Flint, Grand Rapids, and Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
