Mr. Robert Rauschenberg
381 Lafayette Street
New York, New York 10003

Dear Mr. Rauschenberg

You can well imagine my consternation on taking up my duties as director here and finding that there has been no exibit of your works in this community. I have it on good authority, your mother's, that you were born in Port Arthur.

Jules Pasquin used to say, "I do not choose to have been born in (wherever it was, somewhere in the Balkans). But we are not going to let you off so easy.

It was refreshing to find at the recent AAM convention in New York "the New York Artists'Strike convention", that I was not from such an unheard-of place. People would say, "So you're from around where Rauschenberg was born". Honestly, I am not making that up, and I loved telling it to my board.

So, since you were born in the Balkans we shall exibit you in the Balkans, if you will let us. Furthermore we should make a big thing of it. There really aught to be joint exibits in Beaumont and Port Arthur, but I do not as yet know how feasable that would be.

Could we perhaps time the exibit with your next visit to Lafayette?

Please let us know what your pleasure is, and we shall try to get things underway as soon as possible.

Very truly yours,

Claude L. Kennard
