TRANSLATION - RENARD LETTER TO ILEANA SONNABEND 1/23/84

Dear Ileana Sonnabend:

I am happy to confirm the conversations we have had with you and Robert Rauschenberg as well as the one that I have just had with Jean-Louis Prat, Director of the Maeght Foundation, concerning on the subject of the exhibition of new works on one part of the documents sent by Renault Recherches Art & Industries to Rauschenberg.

Jean-Louis Prat has confirmed to me and confirmed to you directly that he has programmed an exhibition at the foundation at the dates that we have established together namely from the 12th of May to the 30th of June of this year. The show is to take place in the space Rauschenberg has chosen during his visit at Saint-Paul in December 1983.

I also confirm that the Maeght Foundation and Renault Recherches Art Industries will take the transport and insurance, the production of the catalogue, and the production of the poster that Rauschenberg has accepted to design for this occasion. The travel and stay of Rauschenberg and Terry Van Brunt for the hanging and installation of the exhibition will also be covered.

After our last telephone conversation, in order to simplify the preparation of this exhibition, we propose that all problems relating to this exhibition should be discussed between yourself and Jean-Louis Prat. It is well understood, however, that in case of other exhibitions of this ensemble that should take place, they would be organized under your control following Rauschenberg’s wishes.

In regards to the choice that I have to make according to our agreement of 1981 which could not be before, December 1983, since, as far as I know, none of the works had yet been realized. I confirm our conversation that took place in your office with Rauschenberg and my willingness to choose the works among the works which will make up this future exhibition.

I remain at your disposal to give you other precision you may have and send you my best greetings.

Claude Louis Renard
