RAUSCHENBERG, STEPHEN SHORE
ADD ONE

Between 1963 and 1967, Rauschenberg created nine theater pieces of his own, works which constitute a significant contribution to the history of artists' theater. Recently, he has provided the visual elements for two dances of Trisha Brown, one of which is "Set and Reset" (1983) being performed this year by the Trisha Brown Dance Company in the Center's NEW DANCE/NEW VISION Series at Cleveland's State Theater on September 29.

RAUSCHENBERG/PERFORMANCE has previously exhibited at the Cooper Union in New York City, and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas. After leaving Cleveland, the exhibition will travel to the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh and the Norton Gallery and School of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida.

The presentation of RAUSCHENBERG/PERFORMANCE in Cleveland and the publication of the catalog were made possible by a grant from The Cleveland Foundation. Additional support for the catalog was provided by the Norton Gallery and School of Art and, for the exhibition, by the Ohio Arts Council.

Concurrently with RAUSCHENBERG/PERFORMANCE will be an exhibition of THE GARDENTS AT GIVERNY: A VIEW OF MONET'S WORLD BY STEPHEN SHORE - a beautiful, lush portfolio of photographs from a series of prints on Claude Monet's gardens at Giverny, France. The seven 20 by 24 color prints represent a selection from twenty-four photographs originally commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The gardens, the greatest source of inspiration for Monet's work for forty years, fell into disrepair after his death in 1926. Restoration, faithful to Monet's vision, was begun in 1977. Stephen Shore, critically acclaimed American photographer, photographed, from 1977 to 1982, the rebirth of these gardens of unkempt harmony with intense observation, fidelity and beauty.

GARDENS AT GIVERNY was curated by Jill Sands, former photography curator for the Center who is currently working as a free-lance photography curator and consultant in Cleveland. A book, published by Aperture and containing the full series of Shore's Giverny prints, will accompany the exhibition.

The Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm.
