But these [[strikethrough]]new American [[/strikethrough]]artists in New York [[strikethrough]] came [[/strikethrough]] brought to art [[/strikethrough]] a hunger for revealed emotional depths and an appetite for form, internally cadenced, long and sonorous, at once as dense and also linear as lines of Biblical poetry or, as Gorky said, "the songs in the fields."  What I miss most (he said once) are the songs in the fields. Noone sings them any more.....
Some years later, when the artists would have found their individual voices, some of them would put into apocalyptic words the nature [[strikethrough]] quality [[/strikethrough]] of their search.

It is possible that what I found later on....art...would be a substitute for of what religion had been for me earlier. 

But [[/strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] form the emotion would take was not apparent. There were various forms of Expressionism - German, Russian, Middle-European being worked and exhibited. Theories of psychoanalysis and anthropology offered clues for the freeing of buried [[strikethrough]] primitivist [[/strikethrough]]feelings. The [[strikethrough]] work and writings [[/strikethrough]] paintings of the Russian mystic-abstractionist Kandinsky, shown at the Museum of [[strikethrough]] Modern [[/strikethrough]] Non Objective Art from 1939, and his writings translated in '46 , were [[strikethrough]] important [[/strikethrough]] catalysts. 
 
Color (Kandinsky wrote) embodies an enormous though unexplored power which can affect the entire human body as a physical organism...Therefore, color is [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] a means of exercising direct influence upon the soul.
