Dear Mr. Gagosian:

I am writing in regard to the forthcoming exhibition at the Downtown Branch of the Whitney Museum of American Art, entitled Modes of Address. The exhibition brings together twenty-five years of work in which language plays a crucial role in the production of meaning. It includes painting, sculpture, photography, and installation works. Artists represented include John Baldessari, Jenny Holzer, Silvia Kolbowski, Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Nauman, Mary Kelly, Ed Ruscha and Lawrence Weiner among others. The exhibition will run from July 25 through September 23, 1988.

I understand through Richard Armstrong that you a currently holding a work which would greatly contribute to the comprehensive scope and overall success of the exhibition. I would like to request the loan of the following work:

1. Roy Lichtenstein
"I can see the whole room...," 1961
Oil on canvas, 48 X 48

I hope that you will be willing to grant this loan and am thus enclosing a copy of our loan agreement form for the work listed above. The white copy is to be completed and returned to us; the blue copy is for your records. We will, of course, be glad to pay for all insurance, packing, and transportation charges as arranged to your requirements by our registrar.
