I never knew that story - but from whatever cause I cannot say I admired or thought adult - his treatment of Elizabeth. The trouble had nothing to do with money - He told me this himself - then there was a period. - I put a period also.

What you tell me of your recent painting sounds depthful - and full of grace. - I am working now - quite terribly hard these last days - but my back now needs a rest. - It was a green pain at the beginning now it is a brown pain. as I wrote Elizabeth Ames - today - a rest in my bed helps a brown pain - I want her to know the worst where I am concerned. - Dr Dryfus - who has taken care of me in the most amiable manner has asked me to give him a painting. He never would send me a bill though I pressed him to do so many times. Now he has just sprung this gift idea - and I am in knots because he wants something done in Paris - and nothing I have seems to me appropriate at present. I have a bare canvas in the corner waiting.

Lovely Paris, open to the skys, and still a great city Almost every where you can see the cloud formations as if you were on a hill top. The Kings and Emperors did - beautiful deeds in building - They liked their buildings called of their time - so they left their signature - and every frenchman walking down an ally can tell you which house was built when - which King reigned. I like the beauty of this people when they have it. It gets under the skin. It is intelligent and exciting. I fear Russia will bring us all down
