Gordon Atty for Frank McCabe for rent of farm 11 mos. & 21 days at $75. per mo. and for 350 cords of wood at $4. per cord, amounting in the aggregate to $2,277.50/100 with report. That this farm was first used by Gov't in June 1863 for benefit of freedmen. The greater part of the wood had been and to give camp to the guns in the Defense of Washington. No buildings, no fences, the said well run out, and a large portion uncleared. The property was sold in Jany 1864 to F M Cabe at a Tax Sale. Since this 75 acres have been cleared and cultivated, 400 loads of manure put on the land, and the farm put in a thorough state of cultivation 60 cords of wood have been cut since the purchase, the price paid by C.Q.M. Dept of Washington for standing wood is $1.00 per cord. Thinks the Government has fully reimbursed the claimant for use of his land. |
