Major General Howard,
Chf. Bureau Freedmen's Affairs,
Washington, D.C.

Dr Sr,

Your appointment to the direction of affairs relating to the Freedmen has awakened an interest in my mind to engage in the same work, if an opportunity offers of being useful.

I have been engaged for nearly three years in the army in the work of the Christian Commission. As this work is now nearly finished, if my previous service in the armies East and West have been of any advantage in fitting me for the Freedmen's work, I desin [[design]] to offer my services.

With consideration of great respect, I remain
Very respectfully your obedient servant,
