Sir:
I found two things from a free intercourse with the various classes of Richmond society: First: that the demand for education among the uneducated, whether white or colored is earnest and almost universal.  In two weeks about 3000 children were brought into schools.  These were chiefly colored, because they were the chief objects of attention. The poor whites were also eager for schools, and two, one for males and one for females, of about 55 pupils in each, were acquired. There seemed to be many other fields alike ready for cultivation.  I think an indefinite work may be done among this class of "poor whites:.
